Wheel of the Year

The year is the circle of life.  Birth and death are celebrated as one can not be with out the other.  Notice that many ancient pagan holidays are the same as modern Christian holidays.  This is due in part to ancient Pagans that continued to celebrate pagan holidays while the Christians attempted to convert them.  The Christians adopted the pagan holidays and gave them Christian meaning making the conversion 'easier'.   Thus, the church gained more power over more people.

Imbolc

February 1

A celebration of the first signs of spring, the return of longer days, and warmer temperatures. The trees begin to blossom and new plants push out from Mother Earth. Snow and ice melt and the rivers flow stronger. This is celebrated as the first of three Sabbats of the growing light.

This day is the beginning of Spring.  This does not always you are enjoying spring like weather!  Flowers may begin to bloom and leaves begin to sprout.  The earth is awake and celebrating the return of the God.  On this day light and dark are of equal length. Exercises in balance, good and bad, male and female, strength and wisdom, become important.  It is a time to improve and renew.

Beltane

May 1

Spring is here and in full force.  This is the last of the spring festivals and fruit is the theme of the celebration. The year is young, and this is a time for love and union. Love magick is at its strongest at this time of the year.  Above all, harmony with nature and learning to love others and themselves is important at this time.

Mid Summer
June 19-22
 the Sun enters Cancer

The longest day of the year, this is the time when the sun reaches its peak in the sky.  The days are warm, or hot if you live in the south, and the gardens begin to ripen with the fruits and veggies that will be gathered in the Fall.  Now is the time to harvest herbs for the winter.  Spring has given us the power to move into projects of growth.  Now is the time to complete them.

Lammas
August 1

This marks the first of three festivals to celebrate the harvest. Early grains, berries and some vegetables are ready for the harvest. The days are still warm and long, and it is the time to start canning for the coming winter. Celebrate the abundance of the earth at this time.  The work you did in the spring and summer will pay off now.

Mabon
September 19-22
 the Sun enters Libra

The days and nights are again balanced and the earth prepares for sleep.  The trees turn and they are already falling. The harvest is finished and there is muck baking.  Now is the time to give thanks for the harvest in full and finish any work for the winter.  Gather seeds for the following spring and contemplate the dormant earth.  Balance now is with the coming sleep.

Samhain
October 31

The last harvest festival, now is the time to enjoy the fruits of the season.  Pumpkins and apples, nuts and grains are full on every table.  Winter meat is made ready and this begins the withch’s New Year!!  Because it is held to be the time when the veil between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead is thinnest, it is a time to remember the dead. On this night many put out food for their ancestors and try to contact loved ones. People dress in costume (now a popular celebration know as Halloween) to help make the contact between the living and dead easier.  Look back at your heritage and thank those who came before.

Yule
December 19-22
the Sun enters Capricorn

This is the longest night of the year and half way through the winter.  It is a time to celebrate the the warmer months that are ahead and enjoy the fruits of the months that have passed.  The earth is deep in her sleep and loved ones are close.  This time is celebrated as a birth of hope (not unlike the Christian birth of Christ, a symbol of hope) and of the good times to come.  The light shall return and a new year of hope and love.
